07/07/12 – Measurably Very Soft -

Excellent test results for softness have been received for each of the five bales of Huacaya alpaca wool put together by the SRS Group. The wool is being offered for sale by Perth wool brokers, Primaries.

Resistance to compression tests are used to measure softness. The lower the measurement, the softer the wool is. The softness measurements ranged fron 4.2 to 4.6 kilopascals for the five bales of alpaca wool. Cashmere measures at about 5.8 kilopascals and Merino wool from 8 to 12 kilopascals.

Fibre diameter measurements of the alpaca wool bales ranged from 20.8 microns to 24.8 microns. The vegetable matter content was low (0.3 to 0.8%) and yields high (86.2 to 89.0 %).

Glenhope is situated on 60 hectares of land, 4 kms from Armidale in Northern NSW, Australia. With a combination of native and improved pastures, mild summers and cool winters the conditions are perfect for breeding alpacas. On our property we use sustainable farming practices and each year we fatten about 40 angus weaners for market.

Over the years we have travelled extensively looking at animals and keeping up to date with cutting edge breeding technologies. The relationships we have developed with like minded breeders in Australia and overseas are invaluable and we hope to continue developing this network of people.

David together with Dr Jim Watts is committed to teaching and assisting breeders in Australia and other countries become involved in using the SRS® breeding system. Workshops were held in Germany in 2009 and again in Northern and Southern Germany and Italy in 2010.

Bron and David welcome enquiries from new and established breeders wanting to explore the possibility of breeding alpaca or becoming involved in the SRS® breeding programme.

Find out more about us.
